Yes, the man we now know for his powerful performances was once more comfortable on a basketball court than in front of a camera.
Basketball was Ali Fazal’s first love
During his school years, Ali Fazal was heavily into sports. Basketball and hockey were among his favourites and he eventually captained his school’s basketball team for nearly three years. He was good enough to play at the state level and had serious ambitions of taking the sport forward.
In fact, Ali has spoken about dreaming of representing India in basketball.
But then came the twist that changed everything.
A serious arm injury during a match forced him to step away from the sport he loved. The injury was devastating because basketball wasn’t just a hobby for him — it was the career he had started imagining for himself.
One injury, one school play and a completely different destiny
With basketball suddenly out of the picture, Ali found himself looking for something else to do. That’s when acting entered his life almost by accident.
He joined a school production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. What began as a detour eventually became the beginning of a completely different journey.
Ali has described acting as something that essentially “chased” him rather than something he had carefully planned. The stage gave him a new outlet, and soon the boy who had dreamed about sports was discovering that he also had a knack for performing.
And perhaps that’s the most interesting part of his story: the career he never planned became the one that changed his life.
From 3 Idiots to Fukrey
Ali eventually moved from theatre to films, and one of his early breakthroughs came with Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots.Rajkumar Hirani spotted Ali during his theatre days and was impressed by his performance. That meeting eventually opened the door for Ali to audition for 3 Idiots, and he landed the role of Joy Lobo, one of the film’s students.Though his role was relatively small, the film gave audiences their first glimpse of the actor.
He later appeared in films including Fukrey, which helped him establish himself as a recognizable face in Bollywood. His career then expanded beyond Hindi cinema as well, with projects such as Victoria & Abdul putting him on an international platform.
But the role that truly changed the game was still waiting for him.
Then came Guddu Pandit
Enter Mirzapur.
As Guddu Pandit, Ali Fazal went from being a familiar actor to becoming one of the most talked-about performers of the streaming era. The character’s raw aggression, ambition and emotional complexity allowed him to show audiences a completely different side of his acting.
