But behind the spiritual figure known as Maharaj-ji was another, much quieter story — that of Ram Beti Devi, the woman who was married to him before he became one of India’s most revered spiritual figures.
While Neem Karoli Baba’s journey from a village in Uttar Pradesh to becoming a globally respected spiritual teacher has been widely discussed, Ram Beti’s story has largely remained away from the spotlight.
And perhaps that is what makes her journey so intriguing.
Who Was Ram Beti?
Ram Beti Devi, also referred to as Ram Beti Sharma, came from a Brahmin family in Uttar Pradesh. She married Lakshman Das Sharma, the man who would later become known across the world as Neem Karoli Baba.
The marriage took place when they were both very young, reflecting the social customs of that period. A biography published by a Neem Karoli Baba devotee site says Lakshman Das married Ram Beti of Badam Baas when he was around 11 years old.
At that point, there was little indication that the young man would eventually leave ordinary domestic life and become a spiritual figure whose name would travel far beyond India.
When Lakshman Das Chose the Spiritual Path
The biggest turning point in Ram Beti’s life came when her husband increasingly moved towards a life of spirituality and eventually left home to pursue his spiritual journey.
Lakshman Das spent years travelling and engaging in spiritual practices before becoming known as Neem Karoli Baba.
For Ram Beti, however, life continued on an entirely different path.
She was left to shoulder the responsibilities of home and family. Reports describe her as living a simple rural life, working around the household and raising the children while remaining largely away from public attention.
It was not the life associated with the wife of a world-famous spiritual figure.
There were no headlines, no public appearances and no spotlight.
Just family, responsibility and an ordinary life.
The Woman Who Stayed Away From Fame
One of the most striking aspects of Ram Beti’s story is how little she sought the public attention that eventually surrounded her husband.
While Neem Karoli Baba became increasingly well known among spiritual seekers, Ram Beti remained largely connected to her village and family life. Reports say she did not become involved in the administration of his ashrams and stayed away from the public religious world built around him.
In many ways, her story runs parallel to his.

Did Neem Karoli Baba Return to His Family?
Leaving home did not necessarily mean that Neem Karoli Baba completely severed his connection with his family.
He returned to Akbarpur on several occasions and met his family even after beginning his spiritual journey. His life, however, remained increasingly centred around spiritual practice, travel and his devotees.
This makes Ram Beti’s story more complex than simply being the wife of a man who walked away from his household.
She was part of the early chapter of his life — a chapter that existed long before the world knew him as Neem Karoli Baba.

There is a tendency to remember the people surrounding famous spiritual personalities only through the fame of the person they were connected to.
Ram Beti’s story deserves to be viewed differently.
Her life was not defined by public recognition. Instead, it was shaped by responsibility, family and simplicity.
While her husband became associated with spiritual teachings, devotees and places such as Kainchi Dham, Ram Beti remained largely outside that world.
That contrast makes her story fascinating.
The world remembers Neem Karoli Baba as a spiritual master.
But before he became Maharaj-ji, he was also Lakshman Das Sharma — a young man who had a wife named Ram Beti.
She may not have had the fame, followers or spiritual legacy associated with Neem Karoli Baba, but her story represents another side of his journey — the side that existed before the world knew him as Maharaj-ji.
