Veteran actor Gajendra Chauhan, best known for playing Yudhishthir in BR Chopra’s iconic Mahabharat, has shared his thoughts on Nitesh Tiwari’s much-awaited Ramayana following the release of its trailer.
Chauhan admitted that he was not entirely impressed with the trailer, particularly pointing towards the portrayal of Kaikeyi and the emotional impact of the exile sequence. He also felt that Kaikeyi’s look appeared too modern for the mythological setting.
However, Chauhan had words of appreciation for Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal of Lord Ram, acknowledging that the actor carried the image of the character convincingly. His comments come amid the ongoing discussion around the casting of the ambitious epic.
One casting decision that particularly impressed Chauhan was Arun Govil as King Dashrath. Govil, who became synonymous with Lord Ram after playing the character in Ramanand Sagar’s legendary Ramayan, has been cast as Dashrath in the new film. Chauhan called the casting a wise choice.
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Raavan, with Sunny Deol also featuring in the ensemble cast. The film has generated massive anticipation following the release of its trailer and is being mounted as a two-part cinematic epic.
The first part of Ramayana is scheduled to arrive in theatres on November 6, 2026.
Chauhan’s comments add another perspective to the growing conversation around the film, particularly its casting, performances and interpretation of the iconic characters.
