Actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has responded to the criticism surrounding her controversial “Generation Gutter” remark, saying her comments were directed at the behaviour of a section of protesters and not an entire generation. The clarification comes after her statement triggered widespread debate on social media.
In a video shared on her social media, Kangana defended her stance, questioning whether abusive language and objectionable behaviour during protests should be considered acceptable in public spaces.
“Excuse me, will you teach your daughter to behave like this? Is this what we want to normalise?” she said, while explaining that her criticism was aimed at those using abusive slogans and vulgar language during demonstrations.
The actor-politician said that while peaceful protests are a democratic right, public conduct should remain within the boundaries of decency and constitutional values. She also alleged that parts of the media had selectively highlighted her earlier remarks without presenting the full context.
Kangana’s clarification follows backlash over her earlier comments on the ongoing protests, in which she referred to some young demonstrators as “Generation Gutter”. The remarks sparked criticism from political leaders and social media users, with many accusing her of making sweeping generalisations about Gen Z.
The controversy has also led to a war of words between Kangana and representatives of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), who criticised her comments and questioned her choice of language. Kangana, in turn, maintained that her observations were based on the conduct she witnessed and insisted she was not targeting an entire generation.
As the debate continues online, Kangana has stood by her position, reiterating that her intention was to speak against abusive public behaviour rather than label all young people.
