Netflix has announced the global premiere of its upcoming military drama Operation Safed Sagar, scheduled to release on August 7. Inspired by one of the Indian Air Force’s most challenging missions during the 1999 Kargil War, the series tells the untold story of the Golden Arrows Squadron and their role in the world’s highest air war.
Set against the backdrop of the Kargil conflict, the series goes beyond the battlefield to explore the lives of the air warriors behind the mission. It highlights their courage, sacrifice, camaraderie and the difficult decisions they made while serving the nation, offering audiences a deeply human perspective on a defining chapter of India’s military history.
Directed by Oni Sen and created by Abhijeet Singh Parmar and Kushal Srivastava, Operation Safed Sagar features an ensemble cast including Siddharth, Jimmy Shergill, Abhay Verma, Dia Mirza, Prajakta Koli, Adil Hussain, Mihir Ahuja, Taaruk Raina, Arnav Bhasin and Amrita Bagchi.
Announcing the series, Tanya Bami, Series Head at Netflix India, described it as a first-of-its-kind Indian war drama inspired by the Indian Air Force’s role during the Kargil War. She said the series is a tribute to the bravery, dedication and sacrifice of the Golden Arrows Squadron, while also offering viewers an authentic look into the lives of Air Force pilots. She added that the combination of cinematic storytelling, large-scale production and advanced visual effects aims to deliver an immersive viewing experience.
The creators, Abhijeet Singh Parmar and Mehboob Pal Singh Brar of Feel Good Films, revealed that the project was inspired by co-creator Kushal Srivastava’s experience in the Indian Air Force. According to them, the story evolved into more than a war drama, focusing on friendship, leadership, sacrifice and the emotional challenges faced by soldiers and their families. They also shared that the series was filmed across more than 100 locations, including areas over 16,000 feet above sea level, blending large-scale military action with intimate human stories.
Producer Sanjay Routray of Matchbox Shots LLP said the series aims to honour a significant chapter in India’s history with honesty and cinematic scale. He noted that the extensively researched script balances intense military operations with deeply personal moments of heroism, making it a story that deserves to reach audiences worldwide.
