SS Rajamouli, Nag Ashwin, Atlee: Indian Directors Lead The ‘Hit Club’

The Indian cinema is one which keeps evolving and there are a handful of directors who have managed to leave the audience impressed with their work. These directors haven’t just given us memorable films, they’ve also received appreciation through national awards, set global benchmarks, and built loyal fanbase across languages and regions. Here’s a list of the storytellers who have cracked the code and are rewriting what it means to be a ‘hit filmmaker’ in Indian cinema.

    1. 1. Nag Ashwin

    2. Blockbusters: Mahanati, Kalki 2898 AD
Accolades: National Award for Best Feature Film (Mahanati), praised for originality, world-building, and genre reinvention.

After a heartfelt impression with Yevade Subramanyam, Nag Ashwin delivered Mahanati — that became a critical and commercial success and also won him a National Award. In 2024, he pushed boundaries with Kalki 2898 AD starring Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, and Prabhas. With Nag Ashwin gearing up for the next chapter of the Kalki universe, he has positioned himself as a director, who blends art with scale and continues to raise the bar for Indian storytelling.

    2. SS Rajamouli

Blockbusters: Magadheera, Eega, Baahubali: The Beginning, Baahubali 2, RRR
Accolades: Academy Award, Golden Globe, National Awards, and multiple international honors.

With Baahubali, SS Rajamouli created India’s first full-fledged cinematic universe and turned a regional language film into a global sensation. His magnum opus RRR brought home India’s first-ever Oscar (won in the category of Best Original Song) and garnered acclaim at the Golden Globes. He’s all set to work with Mahesh Babu on a globe-trotting action adventure — a massive project referred to as India’s answer to Indiana Jones.

    3. Prashanth Neel

    Blockbusters: KGF Chapter 1 & 2, Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire

Prashanth Neel brought Kannada cinema into the spotlight with his gritty and epic storytelling. With KGF, he turned Yash into a pan-India superstar and created a cult following for his high-octane action dramas. Salaar further cemented his reputation as a filmmaker who blends scale with swag. Neel is now working on Salaar: Part 2 – Shouryaanga Parvam, and an alleged collaboration with Jr NTR.

    4. Atlee Kumar

    Blockbusters: Theri, Mersal, Bigil, Jawan

Atlee’s films are known for its emotional punch, massy visuals, and box office dominance. After an array of blockbusters in Tamil with Thalapathy Vijay, he made a phenomenal entry into Bollywood with Shah Rukh Khan starrer Jawan, one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time. With chatter of a Jawan sequel in progress and a possible Hollywood debut brewing, Atlee is proving that his cinematic language is truly universal.

    1. 5. Lokesh Kanagaraj

      Blockbusters: Kaithi, Master, Vikram, Leo

Lokesh Kanagaraj has built one of the most exciting universes in Indian cinema — the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU). Known for his crisp storytelling, stylized action scenes, and iconic hero entries, his movies are treated as celebrations by fans. With Kaithi 2 and Thalaivar 171 with Rajinikanth already in the works, Lokesh’s universe is only getting bigger and bolder with each chapter.

    1. 6. Sandeep Reddy Vanga

Blockbusters: Arjun Reddy, Kabir Singh, Animal

Sandeep Reddy Vanga brings unfiltered, raw emotion and intensity to every frame he directs. His debut Arjun Reddy starring Vijay Deverakonda and Shalini Pandey became a cultural phenomenon, and the Hindi remake Kabir Singh starring Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani broke records while sparking massive debate. With Animal (starring Ranbir Kapoor), Sandeep delivered one of the most talked-about films of 2023 — both for its impactful action, visual flair and emotional drama. Now, all eyes are on Spirit, his upcoming action-drama with Prabhas, and the much-anticipated sequel Animal Park.
