Author Amish Tripathi has dismissed reports claiming that actor Ranveer Singh and Birla Studios are developing a film adaptation of his bestselling novel The Immortals of Meluha. The clarification comes after reports suggested that Ranveer had acquired the rights to the Shiva Trilogy and was planning to turn it into a large-scale cinematic franchise.
According to Variety India, Amish Tripathi clarified that the rights to the trilogy still remain with him and no deal has been finalised with anyone yet.
“The rights for the Shiva Trilogy are with me. And nothing has been signed with anyone as yet. Of course, I have huge respect for Ranveer, and am a big fan of his. But this news is not true,” Amish said.
Earlier reports had claimed that Ranveer Singh was developing The Immortals of Meluha under his production banner, Maa Kasam Film, in collaboration with Birla Studios. The actor was also reportedly expected to play Lord Shiva in the ambitious adaptation.
As per Pinkvilla, the project was said to be in the writing stage, with plans to build the Shiva Trilogy as a long-term cinematic universe spread across three films. Reports also claimed that Ranveer and Ananya Birla were actively involved in shaping the screenplay and larger vision of the franchise.
A source quoted in the report had stated, “Ranveer has been passionate about bringing Meluha to the big screen for a long time now. The acquisition happened recently, and the project is now officially under development.”
However, Amish’s latest statement has now denied any such acquisition or official collaboration.
The Immortals of Meluha is the first part of Amish Tripathi’s hugely popular Shiva Trilogy, followed by The Secret of the Nagas and The Oath of the Vayuputras. Set in the fictional land of Meluha, the story follows Shiva, a Tibetan tribal leader who gradually becomes the prophesied Neelkanth.
This is not the first time the trilogy has attracted interest from filmmakers. Back in 2012, filmmaker Karan Johar had acquired the rights to the novel with plans for a feature film directed by Karan Malhotra. The project was eventually shelved amid concerns over the depiction of a Hindu deity on screen.
The rights later moved to Sanjay Leela Bhansali, though that adaptation also failed to materialise. In 2022, Amish had announced a web series adaptation with Shekhar Kapur and Suparn Varma, but that version too did not move ahead.
Meanwhile, Ranveer Singh continues to have a packed lineup of projects. The actor is reportedly expected to begin work on filmmaker Aditya Dhar’s next directorial venture in 2027. He is also said to be attached to Pralay, directed by Jay Mehta, though an official announcement is still awaited.
