For years, fans have believed that Aamir Khan’s iconic character Rancho (Phunsukh Wangdu) from 3 Idiots was inspired by education reformer and innovator Sonam Wangchuk. However, the makers of the blockbuster have now shared differing views on the long-standing debate, reigniting curiosity among movie lovers.
Speaking about the popular belief, Aamir Khan clarified that Rancho was not directly based on Sonam Wangchuk. The actor said people often make the connection because both promote innovation and unconventional thinking, but the character itself was not created around Wangchuk’s life. Aamir also expressed his respect and concern for Wangchuk, stating that one does not need to be the inspiration behind a film character to earn admiration.
Interestingly, director Rajkumar Hirani shared a different perspective. According to him, the roots of Rancho’s personality go back to his days at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), where he met individuals whose free-thinking attitude and approach towards life eventually shaped the beloved character. Hirani suggested that Rancho was born out of several real-life experiences rather than being modelled on a single individual.
Producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra, meanwhile, believes that parts of Rancho reflect his own personality and life experiences. His comments add yet another layer to the discussion, indicating that the character evolved through multiple influences during the writing process.
The debate over Rancho’s inspiration has continued ever since 3 Idiots released in 2009. While many viewers associated the character with Sonam Wangchuk because of the similarities in their educational philosophy and innovative mindset, the film’s creators now suggest that Rancho is a fictional character shaped by a combination of experiences rather than one real-life personality.
With 3 Idiots 2 already in development, conversations around the iconic film have once again returned to the spotlight. Regardless of who inspired Rancho, the character remains one of Indian cinema’s most memorable protagonists, continuing to inspire audiences more than a decade after the film’s release.
