When Naseeruddin Shah expresses his ideas about events going on around him, he doesn’t hold back. His words have frequently gotten him into difficulty, but his actor wife Ratna Pathak Shah works to keep him from saying anything that could get him into trouble.
In a recent interview, Ratna Pathak Shah said that she occasionally tries to persuade Naseeruddin to hold back on expressing his opinions out of concern that people would one day throw stones at her home. Aaj ke zamaane mein koi aa kar khada ho jayega ghar par humaare, pathar daalne (In today’s time someone will come and throw stones at our house),” the Sarabhai Vs. Sarabhai actor stated in a conversation with journalist Siddharth Kanan.
She worries that they would lose their jobs if Shah spoke his ideas. “Anyway, getting a job these days is so difficult since there are so many excuses,” Ratna remarked. Therefore, if at all possible, one must be rational while remaining fearless.
But she also made a point about how society won’t advance if no one calls attention to its errors. “Darr lagta hai, but kya karein, if duniya mein jo galat ho raha hai usko koi point out nahi karega, toh vo sudhrega kaise,” (We feel afraid. What should we do, though? How will things improve if no one calls attention to what is wrong with the world?
