    Overall Rating : 3.5/5

Cast : Gulshan Devaiah, Janhvi Kapoor, Roshan Mathew, Rajesh Tailang, Adil Hussain, Meiyang Chang

    Releasing in : Theatres

Plot : The journey of a young IFS officer, Suhana Bhatia played by Janhvi Kapoor belonging to a prominent family of patriots, who gets embroiled in a dangerous personal conspiracy while far from her home turf, at a career-defining post. She is naive but her undying love for her nation defines her whole vibe.

What We Loved : The fact that the movie gives you the actual thrills what a thriller movie must have snowballed with roundabout able performances and nerve-building sequences, Ulajh is a treat for people who like watching thrillers. Also, not to give any spoilers, but the treatment of RAW and ISI agents along with special forces is done in an unique manner away from the usual caricature stuff which we have been witnessing. The supporting cast and actors who even have 5 minutes of screen space have delivered and how.

What We Liked : The edit of the movies deserves a special mention along with a very finely placed interval which is indeed clever and crisp. Not to forget, the casting of the film is a big win given the whole cast has given a solid performance and has elevated the watching experience. Lastly, the twist and surprise element in the climax is rewarding for the audience.

What We Didn’t : Though the film is fictional, the way the RAW agents and highly-ranked officials working for the Indian government are shown in respect to their intent is arguable. It might not go well with a lot of people.

Performances : Take a bow, Roshan Mathew! Consistency is his tool & language plus industry barriers are of no relevance for an actor of his craft. In a supremely earnest way, he made Sebin Josephkutty his own. The way the actor brings the house down and shows an entirely different side of his craft took the movie home. He is simply beyond exceptional and I hope we get to see him in more Hindi movies.

‘The eyes Chico, they never lie! This statement is supremely well-fitted for Gulshan Devaiah’s portrayal of his character in the movie. He is a chameleon of an actor finest at his playground. In ‘Ulajh’, he swifts & glides hence elevating the watching experience. His Nakul/Humayun acts are so streamlined with his aura as an actor and as characters that the audience in in for a joyride.

Lineage & legacy, in real sense, is what you make out of it. It can become either a burden or a boon crafted out of hard-work. Learn from Janhvi Kapoor (in both real & reel) how to shape it into the latter. Janhvi as Suhana hits the bull’s eye as an actor where she mixes her undying love for nation with her easy onscreen naive-ness. Not to forget, the scenes where she finds destiny and cunning people adjoining together against her dreams have shaped out pretty well. Also, her scenes with Roshan Mathew are epic.

Rajesh Tailang has proved he is a veteran with his smooth performance which can easily be a guidebook for an actor. He plays a trustable Salim Sayeed who shows different shades of his character as the movie goes forward.

Conclusion : If you like espionage thrillers which have a mold of their own away from caricatures and are edited crisply, Ulajh is your go-to-film. Do not miss the film if you are die-hard Roshan Mathew fan.
